Can you see the ground?

That’s what my dad asked me as I pulled up to a stoplight with a car in front of me. I was 14 and not yet supposed to be behind the wheel, but my dad didn’t always follow the rules.

“Can you see the ground?” he asked.

I thought, what part of it?

He stated, “If you ever pull up to a red light with a car in front of you, you should have enough space between you that if you have to pull out, you can do so easily. Seeing the ground from the driver’s seat means you have space to maneuver around the car if you need to to get to safety and not be stuck.”
